Pearl Scale

The special feature of the fish is the scales which look like pearls cut in half and pasted on the body. The scales are much calcified and hence harder than the normal ones. The body is oval with a ball-like belly. It has a small head which tapers towards the mouth like a rat. A fine specimen should have large pearl-like scales arranged regularly on both sides of the body, even on the dorsal surface. A large number of color variations - red, iron, bronze, blue, black, red-white; also, there are short-tail and long-tails.
